I go to a school that's graded solely in H/P/F. Preclinically, I have mostly passes with some honors. Clinically, I have all passes. Now supposedly, the dean's office keeps a numeric record of our grades in order to ultimately assign us class rank/AOA status but I'm not sure if that information is disclosed when we apply for residencies (I was given the vague estimate of top 30% in the class) But is this a huge problem in terms of applying for a spot in dermatology? I'm wondering if some of the people who've successfully matched the second (or third) time around could tell me what they think about waiting another year to reapply.

Here's my situation: I was a solid applicant, had 10 interviews, ranked all those programs, and was very surprised to not match. (and no, I don't have any personality quirks that would have set off alarm bells in the interviews). I haven't done any further research projects or publishing...

4th year starts in a month. i was going to start off by taking a vacation month to do some research and try for a pub, then i'm doing an away, then i'm doing a home rotation, and then i'm torn...that's 3 and I've heard advice to stay at 3. Others have said more is merrier.

If I do do something derm-related, what should it be? Another derm rotation? Or try for something more unique like dermpath or pediatric derm?

Or should I do something non-derm? Any...

This really has nothing to do with derm, but I'm getting ready to start internship at a very demanding program. Fourth year has been amazing and I'm pretty much home all the time with my baby. I don't want to leave and start this awful year and have my child not even know me (as happened to a close friend of me-- her son literally will not let her hold him). What's worse is my husband also works crazy hours so our child won't see either of us. Anyone else going through...

Lull in interview season?

I've heard the bulk of the interview season occurs in November, December, January.

I'm getting married in December of this year and wanted to plan it (and the accompanying honeymoon) during a period when interviews are least likely to come in.

I was hoping for a 7-10 day lull around Christmas time. (The transition from Christmas to New Years)

Do people get interviews during that time period? I figured the interviewers, attendings, residents, etc... would...

Congrats to the recent graduates. Wanted your opinion (and from non-recently-graduated too) regarding my own chances as I approach 4th year.

MS1: All honors

MS2: Mostly honors, scattered HP's

Misc MS2 info: research with renowned researcher over 1 year period, 0 pubs though, possible LOR pending

Step 1: 249 (so close)

MS3: All HP's, no honors, outstanding written evaluations though, shelf scores are calculated separately from clinical...

Did any md-phd applicants fail to match this year? All of the md-phd applicants I met on the trail matched. The md-phd still seems to be the top academic credential the top programs are looking for. I matched but it would have been easier with a phd.

I know at places such as Harvard, UPenn, mentioning cosmetic dermatology is like saying a curse word, and in other programs it is no big deal. Why is there so much anger on here? I realize matching in derm is nerve-wracking, but there's no call for some of the hate posts that I see on here. Anonymity brings out the worst in people.

Question to those who are recently matched (or to faculty members who are sitting on the other side of the curtain as evaluators)

What's the role of the shelf exams taken during MS3?

I ask because I've noticed a disturbing downward trend in my own shelf exams as the year progresses.

These scores do make it onto our final transcript (my lowest one to date has been an 80%) but impact our overall grades very slightly. (Shelf is 10%, clinical evals are 90%)...
