Some private practice docs choose to participate in clinical research. Is this financially lucrative (or even viable)? Or are they banking on the increased prestige, consults, etc. that such trials will bring to their practice? Or are they taking a pay cut to do something they enjoy?

It is a pretty standard part of our medical culture today that patients (who are generally female) have the right to refuse to see male physicians - typically, this becomes most apparent in a teaching setting, where appointments are with the clinic rather than a doctor, or the patient may first be seen by a resident or medical student. It seems this preference or refusal (depending how you look at it) is generally felt to be completely legitimate, and is respected to the extent possible....
