Getting a job in NYC?

I was wondering if anyone can comment on how easy/hard it is to obtain a job in NYC if one does not train in NYC. Any advice on how to make the transition easier would also be appreciated (e.g, how and with whom should I network?, etc...)

Hi all,
we are two dermatology residents coming from Zurich, Switzerland to this year's AAD Meeting in San Francisco.
Do you have information and advice which of the courses/focus sessions/symposia etc. are recommendable (we are inscribed for many but without really knowing which ones are great or not).
And... where are the famous resident parties? ;-)
Hope to get to know a few nice derm residents from the states!

in-service advice

Long Dong, There is no standard way to prepare for the in-service. My first year, one of our 3rd years told me to memorize Andrews and a histo text and that would be fine. Ridiculous advice. Miami Review used to publish in-service questions every year. Alas, the last one published is now almost 7 years old. My program had its own internal set of notes compiled by residents, based on in-service questions and ideas, but it got outdated after a while. Additionally, I found the Stiefel board...

I am a pathology-bound MSIV doing a combined derm/dermpath rotation this month and am absolutely loving it! I like that in derm you can see patients, do procedures, and read your own path. My timing couldn't be worse, however, since I am prepared to match into pathology this March. The chair of derm at my school is recommending that I withdraw from the pathology match, scramble into a transitional or prelim spot or do research and apply for derm next year. this is a very common question that has come up on the board around this time every single year.
some people say that it's important to get a good sense of the program and you should "grill" the residents.

i disagree completely.

in many programs, residents have a big say - sometimes 50% veto vote or recommend vote - in the ranklist.
under no circumstances should you "grill" the residents. your best bet is to be friendly, polite, and get to...

Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, the future site of a new dermatology residency program in the next few years, is recruiting medical students interested in dermatology who are able to spend 12 months working on projects related to "academic dermatology." Thanks again Valerie for resurrecting this forum. We appreciate very much all your hard work to keep this going. I was wondering if we can discuss the match rules. There are guidelines in the NRMP website but sometimes, it is better to hear them directly from colleagues. Are programs allowed to tell applicants how they will rank them? For example, can program X tell program B that the former is ranking the latter number 1? How about the reverse, i.e. an applicant telling a program...
