Fellowship in Infectious Dermatology and Underserved Populations
This 12-month fellowship will allow for an intense exposure
to dermatology as it relates to patients with infectious diseases and/or limited access to healthcare, while gaining broad knowledge and understanding of the
field of dermatology as a whole.
This fellowship is intended for those who plan on a career in the practice of (and research in) medical dermatology, with a focus on the
inner-city population. The fellow must have a passion for medical dermatology and research, and have the initiative to
pursue independent projects in a supervised setting.
The fellow will work alongside the faculty of UTMB Dermatology's Austin Program to provide inpatient and outpatient care at Brackenridge
Hospital, the city's only Level-1 trauma center and 'catch-net' hospital for central Texas. The fellow will also help to expand services to public
and VA-based community clinics, which have increasing need for Dermatology services. To provide a solid base of knowledge in Dermatology, the fellow will also
work in the UTMB faculty clinics, where they will learn how to treat common (and uncommon) diseases of the skin.
The fellow will work on several joint research projects between UTMB and the University of Texas at Austin, and will be given the
opportunity to initiate his or her own research project.

Wednesday afternoon- UTMB Faculty Clinics
Thursday morning- VA Outpatient clinic
Thursday afternoon- Research
Friday morning- UTMB Faculty Clinics / City Clinics
Friday afternoon- Brackenridge Inpatient Consultation service/ Research time
The fellow should be a graduate from an ACGME-approved medical school. A minimum of one year of residency in Medicine, Surgery or Pediatrics is required. The fellow must be eligible for a temporary Texas Medical License. A knowledge of medical Spanish is not required, but will be seen as a plus.
The fellow is expected to submit at least one abstract for presentation at a national dermatology meeting and to submit at least one
manuscript to a peer-reviewed dermatology journal by June of the fellowship year.
